Start: Hathersage
End: Castleton
Distance: 21km

Started by heading to the river, though thanks to the map in the hostel followed footpath rather than road as initial planned. The route followed the derwent valley heritage way along the river to shatton. Was a little surprised at one point to see a waymarker for another route pointing straight across the river with no sign of a bridge, a quick look at the map and getting closer to the point showed that the crossing was by stepping stones! Not one for after a lot of rain.

From shatton it was up to win hill. It was a little windy up on top so was quite glad to be heading back down the hill. As it was getting close to lunch time I thought I’d make a short detour to Hope in the quest of a pub lunch, to find both of the pubs closed. So off up to lose hill it was, where I would eat the sandwiches I had just incase.

The next part of the walk followed the ridge between lose hill and mam tor. I have done this part of the walk before, parts of it twice. Though for the first time it wasn’t raining which meant there were fantastic views to both sides of the ridge.

As it looked like I would arrive into Castleton quite early, I decided to go on one of the cavern tours, the one I went on was sidewalk cavern, not sure it was worth it but it used up dome time that would otherwise be spent hanging around the hostel.

Tonight’s accommodation is Castleton YHA which is one of the few if not the only hostel that has a curfew. Most now have code locks to allow you in after reception closes but here the door is licked at 11:30 and if your out your out for the night, having said that the chances of being out that late in a village like this is slim, though there are 6 pubs.

Over the next week I shall be walking the white peak way, and intend to keep a log of the trip here.
Planning the trip has been interesting as it was hard to find any details of the route and the book that describes the route is out of print. Luckily I found a couple of other reports of the route and have based my route in them. Though having now arrived in hathersage there is a map with the route marked in the hall.
I will be walking the route anti clockeise, and due to there noonget being a hostel in bakewell I shall be spending 2 nights in youlgreave and will just have to walk slightly further on the final 2 days.

Less than 24hrs now until my I leave Peru and head back to the UK.

My first flight leaves from Lima airport at 6:50 am local time meaning I am going to have to get a taxi at some horrible hour of the night. Then as I am then connecting to my next international flight in America instead of this being an easy process I have to go through immigration and customs, then check my bags back in and pass back through security to departures. Then my next flight has the joy that it is operated by BA meaning that I have all the fun of coming into Terminal 5.

The question is whether this is better or worse than the way that you are supposed to return from south America on the type of ticket I have, which is via Madrid with Iberia Airline. For some reason the people couldn´t find this flight on their system for any day around when I wanted to return but I have since met someone that is also returning to the UK tomorrow via that route.
